In short
Most modern premium straighteners do. ghd stylers have an automatic sleep mode, listed at 30 minutes for models such as the Max, 10 minutes for the Chronos and 3 minutes for the cordless Unplugged. Cloud Nine's Hibernation Mode switches off after 30 minutes. Check your model's manual, and never rely on auto shut-off instead of switching off.

Leaving straighteners on is one of the most common worries when you are out of the door. The good news is that most current premium stylers switch themselves off after a period of no use. The times vary a lot by brand and model, from a few minutes on cordless tools to half an hour on many corded ones. This guide lists the shut-off times makers publish, explains how sleep modes work, and covers what to look for if you are buying a new styler with safety in mind.
Auto shut-off times by model
These times come from maker listings. Older models and other versions may differ, so check your manual.
| Model | Shut-off after no use | Maker's name for it |
|---|---|---|
| ghd Max | 30 minutes | Automatic sleep mode |
| ghd Chronos and Chronos Max | 10 minutes | Sleep mode |
| ghd Unplugged (cordless) | 3 minutes | Automatic sleep mode |
| ghd Curve tongs and wands | 30 minutes | Automatic sleep mode |
| Cloud Nine Original Iron | 30 minutes | Hibernation Mode |
| BaByliss 9000 cordless tong | See manual | Sleep mode and auto shut-off |
| Dyson Corrale | See manual | Automatic shut-off |
Do ghd straighteners turn themselves off?
Yes. Current ghd stylers have an automatic sleep mode that switches them off when they have not been used for a set time. The time depends on the model. ghd lists 30 minutes on the Max and the Curve range, and 10 minutes on the Chronos, which uses motion-responsive sensors to tell when it is in use. Many ghd stylers beep as they go to sleep; see ghd red light and beeping explained.
To wake a sleeping ghd, switch it off and on again. If yours switches off while you are actually styling, that is not sleep mode, and the cable may have an intermittent fault. See ghd straighteners not working.
How sleep modes work
A straightener knows it is in use in one of two ways. Simpler designs use a timer that starts when you switch on or when you last pressed a button. More advanced designs use sensors that detect movement, or detect hair passing between the plates, and reset the timer each time. Motion sensing allows a shorter timeout, because the styler can tell the difference between resting on the counter and being used.
Cordless stylers usually have the shortest timeouts because they also need to save battery.
Which hair straighteners turn off automatically?
Most premium models from ghd, Cloud Nine, Dyson and BaByliss have some form of auto shut-off. Cheaper and older stylers may not. When buying, look in the listing for words such as sleep mode, auto shut-off, hibernation or safety switch-off, along with the time in minutes.
Our best hair straighteners guide covers premium models, all with an automatic switch-off.
Safe habits, even with auto shut-off
Auto shut-off is a backup, not a replacement for switching off. A straightener stays hot for some time after it powers down.
- Switch off and unplug as soon as you finish.
- Rest it on a heat-resistant mat or its plate guard, never on carpet, bedding or towels.
- Let it cool before putting it in a bag or drawer.
- Keep it out of reach of children and pets while it cools.
- Do not wrap the cable tightly around a hot styler.
Note:If a straightener does not switch off when it should, or becomes hot when switched off, stop using it and contact the maker.
Curling tongs, wands and cordless tools
Auto shut-off is not just a straightener feature. ghd's Curve tongs and wands list the same 30-minute sleep mode as its corded straighteners, and many other premium curling tools have something similar. Check the listing before buying a wand, as some budget tools still lack it.
Cordless tools add a second layer of protection: when the battery runs flat, they stop heating. But a cordless styler can still be switched on by accident in a bag, which is why ghd uses a short 3-minute sleep on the Unplugged and supplies a heat-resistant case. If you travel with one, see can you take straighteners on a plane and our best straighteners for travel guide.
Hot air stylers such as the Dyson Airstrait behave differently again. The Airstrait pauses its airflow when the arms are open, which reduces heat when it is not gripping hair. Check Dyson's manual for any timed switch-off on your version.
