Care and fixes

Most issues come down to dirty plates, the auto shut-off or a fault light. Here is what the common signals mean.

Clean the plates only when the straightener is unplugged and cool, with a soft damp cloth, as the maker describes. Styling products build up on the plates and can make them drag.

Most stylers switch off automatically after a set time, often 30 to 60 minutes. Flashing lights or beeping usually indicate the shut-off, a sleep mode or a fault; the manual lists the meaning for each model.

Buy from the maker or an authorised seller: some brands publish ways to check that a product is genuine. Do not open the body of a styler yourself.
