The ghd Gold is the brand's long-standing everyday straightener and, at a listed 400 g, one of the lightest plate tools on this site. It is a strong fit for people who straighten most days and want a simple, comfortable tool that does one temperature well. What marks it out is that low weight combined with dual-zone technology, a pair of heat sensors that the maker says keep both plates at the same working temperature.

Our take

Dual-zone heat, explained

ghd describes two next-generation heat sensors, one across each styling plate, which together hold 185°C evenly from root to tip. The point of a sensor on each side is that heat loss on one plate, for example when a thick section passes through, is corrected without the other plate overshooting. The plates are ceramic.

There is no temperature dial. That keeps operation to a single switch, but also means everyone uses the same heat regardless of hair type.

For most people with medium-textured hair that is not a problem, since 185°C is the temperature ghd uses across its whole styler range.

Weight and handling

Amazon gives the Gold a weight of 400 g and a length of 27 cm, with a body 3.2 cm across. In practice, a light straightener is easier to angle for flicks and bends and less tiring on long hair. ghd lists it for all hair types, including wavy, curly and straight, and describes the finish as sleek and smooth with more shine.

A thin listing

This particular Amazon page is short on detail. It does not state a sleep mode timer, cable length or voltage, and the bullet points are generic rather than technical. That does not mean the features are missing, only that the listing does not confirm them, so check the manual if auto shut-off matters to you.

Gold or another ghd

The ghd Platinum+ adds ultra-zone predictive heat and a rounder barrel for waves, at a listed 730 g. The ghd Max uses the same dual-zone system with 70% larger plates for long or thick hair. If fine hair is the concern, the Cloud Nine Original Iron starts as low as 100°C, which the Gold cannot match.

Verdict

Buy the ghd Gold if you want a light, uncomplicated straightener for daily sleek styles. People with long or thick hair will get through it faster with the ghd Max, and those with fine or fragile hair who want lower heat should look at the Cloud Nine Original Iron.
