ghd Rise: hot brush for root lift on flat hair

The ghd Rise is a heated brush rather than an air brush, built for one job: volume. It suits anyone whose hair sits flat at the crown or loses body by the afternoon, and who wants a quicker route to a full, bouncy finish than a round brush and dryer. ghd claims twice the volume, and its short bristles are designed to get right in at the root.

- Heat is fixed at 185°C, with no lower setting for very fine hair.
Our take
Barrel, bristles and heat
The Rise has a 32 mm barrel, which ghd describes as the right size to add body, fullness and bounce through the lengths. Its 5 mm smooth touch bristles are short so the heated barrel sits as close to the root as possible. Ultra-zone predictive technology holds 185°C across the whole barrel, with the aim of an even result in a single stroke.
There is no airflow at all, so it does not dry hair. It is for styling hair that is already dry, which is how ghd's own gift set listing for the Rise describes it as well.
Using it day to day
Heat-up takes 25 seconds, per the listing. The cool tip lets you hold the end and create tension at the root for maximum lift. A soft stand protects surfaces and the bristles, and the tool switches off after 30 minutes of non-use. The 2.7 m swivel cord and universal voltage are listed, and it comes with a UK three-pin plug. Amazon shows 700 g and a power rating of 50 W.
How it differs from ghd's other brushes
The ghd Glide is a flat smoothing brush for taming frizz, so it gives sleekness rather than lift. The ghd Duet Blowdry is the one to pick if you want to start from wet hair, because it dries as it shapes. The Rise sits between them as a dry-hair volume tool, closer to a heated round brush in what it does.
Who should look elsewhere
With one fixed temperature, there is no way to turn the heat down for very fine or fragile hair. People who want defined curls will get bends and flicks rather than ringlets, so a curling tong is a better fit for that look.
Verdict
The ghd Rise is a good choice for fine or flat hair that needs root lift and body on dry hair, quickly and with steady heat. If frizz rather than volume is your issue, the ghd Glide is the better ghd brush, and if you want to dry and style in one step from wet, look at the ghd Duet Blowdry.
