The Chronos Curve Max Wand is the largest curling barrel ghd makes, at 38 mm, and the maker states it is 65% bigger than its standard size. It is designed for long and very long hair, and its job is broad, loose curls and waves rather than definition. The appeal is simple: on long hair, a narrow barrel can take a long time and leave curls that look tight, while a barrel this wide covers more hair per wrap.

Our take

What ghd says it does

The wand uses the same curl-responsive technology as the rest of the Chronos Curve line, with heat fixed at 185°C. According to the listing, that allows results up to three times faster, frizz-free curls, up to 50% more shine and no extreme heat damage, with footnoted conditions. ghd also claims curls hold their shape for up to 24 hours.

The professional anodised coating is credited with control and glide, and Amazon lists the heater surface as anodised aluminium or anodised titanium.

Size and weight in the hand

Amazon lists a weight of 887 g and a length of 35.9 cm. That is substantial for a wand, which you hold at an angle rather than clamp, so arms can tire on thick, long hair. Working in wide sections reduces the number of passes, and the barrel width helps with that.

Because there is no clamp, you wrap the hair and hold the ends yourself. A heat glove is wise; the listing does not say whether one is included.

Where it fits among ghd curlers

The ghd Chronos Curve Grand Tong offers 32 mm with a clamp, which is easier to control and gives rounder, bouncier curls. The tapered ghd Chronos Curve Wand at 28 to 23 mm creates more textured beach curls. The Max Wand sits above both and aims for the loosest, smoothest wave of the set, so it is closest in result to the Dyson Airwrap Origin's 40 mm air barrel, which uses airflow below 150°C instead of a hot barrel.

Who it will not suit

Short and mid-length hair simply does not have the length to wrap around a 38 mm barrel and make a visible curl. Anyone wanting tight or defined curls should look elsewhere. There are no temperature settings, and the listing does not give sleep mode timing.

Verdict

Buy the Max Wand if your hair is long or very long and you want relaxed, loose waves at a steady heat. If you prefer a clamp and rounder curls, the Chronos Curve Grand Tong is the safer choice, and if you would rather style with air, the Dyson Airwrap Origin offers a similar barrel width.
