The Dyson Airstrait straightens hair with air instead of heated plates. You use it on towel-dried hair, and it dries and straightens each section in one pass. It is designed for people who would otherwise blow-dry and then straighten every morning, and for those who want to avoid pressing hair between hot metal. Dyson claims up to 8 minutes saved per style compared with separate drying and straightening.

Our take
How air straightening works
Two jets of air are directed downwards at a 45° angle through the hair while an integrated comb adds tension. Dyson explains that wet hair has more pliable hydrogen bonds, so lower temperatures can reset its shape as it dries. A Hyperdymium motor with a 13-blade impeller spins at up to 106,000 rpm, and glass bead thermistors check airflow temperature up to 500 times a second.
The listing gives a maximum of 200°C, but Dyson recommends starting at 140°C in Wet mode.
Modes and settings
Wet mode is for wet-to-dry styling and Dry mode is for touch-ups on dry hair. There are 4 heat settings and 3 airflow settings, plus an auto pause. Dyson recommends pre-drying roots and finishing with a cool setting to lock the style. The listing says it works on straight, wavy, curly and coily hair, with guidance for each.
The finish to expect
Because nothing presses the hair flat, the result is closer to a smooth blow-dry than the glassy finish of hot plates. Dyson claims up to 66% less frizz and twice the shine compared with air drying. Anyone who wants a poker-straight, pressed look may still reach for a plate straightener on special occasions.
Amazon lists a weight of 923 g, well above a ghd plate straightener.
Airstrait against the alternatives
The Shark SilkiPro also dries and straightens from wet, but combines airflow with ceramic plates and includes three combs. The ghd Chronos is a conventional straightener for dry hair, much lighter and with a 10-minute sleep mode. The Dyson stands out mainly by removing hot plates altogether, and Dyson positions its Corrale CoolShine as the plate-based alternative within its own range.
Verdict
Choose the Airstrait if your routine starts with wet hair and you want to replace a dryer and straightener while avoiding hot plates. If you want a sleeker pressed finish with airflow, the Shark SilkiPro is the hybrid option, and the ghd Chronos remains the faster pick for dry hair.
