Shark SilkiPro: ceramic plates with dryer airflow

For people with thick hair, the slowest part of straightening is often the blow-dry beforehand. The Turquoise Wave SilkiPro tackles that by adding hair dryer airflow to ceramic straightener plates, so Wet mode dries and straightens towel-dried hair in a single pass. It suits anyone with dense or long hair who currently spends a long time drying before they can start styling. The listed maximum of 230°C also gives headroom for coarse texture.

Our take

Wet mode on dense hair

Shark says Wet mode dries and straightens wet hair into smooth styles with no heat damage, as footnoted on the listing. Clamping the tool near the scalp directs airflow at the roots, which tend to stay damp longest on thick hair. Once hair is dry, Dry mode cuts the airflow and the SilkiPro works as a standard straightener for extra shine and less frizz.

Working in smaller sections than usual in Wet mode will probably give a smoother finish on very thick hair.

Combs for tension

Three interchangeable combs come with the tool: Wide Tooth, Gentle and Precision. The wide tooth comb is the one to try first on dense hair, since it detangles without catching. Shark presents the comb collection as the way the tool adapts to all hair types.

Weight and missing details

Amazon lists 1.59 kg for this colour, the heaviest SilkiPro listing on the site. On thick, long hair that weight is felt across a long session. Plate size, heat up time, cable length and auto shut-off timing are not stated.

SilkiPro against plate and air rivals

The ghd Chronos Max has plates 85% larger than the ghd Gold and a listed weight of 489 g, but needs dry hair. The Dyson Airstrait dries and straightens with air only, with no hot plates. The ghd Duet Style is ghd's own wet to dry hot air styler.

When it is not the right tool

If your hair dries quickly or you already air dry, most of the SilkiPro's extra weight comes from airflow you will not use. A lighter plate straightener would be more comfortable for dry styling alone, and it would take up less room in a drawer or wash bag.

Verdict

The Turquoise SilkiPro is a good fit if you have thick hair and want to cut out the separate blow-dry. If you style dry hair and want speed from wider plates, the ghd Chronos Max is much lighter, and the Dyson Airstrait suits those who want wet to dry styling without hot plates.
