Shark SilkiPro: plates and airflow for curling or smoothing

This Plum Satin SilkiPro is the same two-in-one tool as Shark's other colours: ceramic straightener plates combined with hair dryer airflow. What makes it worth a separate look is Shark's own statement that the design allows straightening, shaping, curling and smoothing, which places it among tools for people who curl with a straightener. It suits someone who wants one device to dry their hair, then switch to Dry mode to add bends or curls.

In its favour

  • The listing states the design allows straightening, shaping, curling or smoothing.
  • Dry mode cuts the airflow so it works like a normal straightener for curling dry hair.
  • Three interchangeable combs are included for different hair types.

Good to know

  • At a listed 1.55 kg it is much heavier than a ghd plate straightener.
  • No auto shut-off timer is stated in the listing.

Our take

Using Dry mode to curl

In Dry mode the airflow cuts out and the SilkiPro behaves like a conventional ceramic straightener, which is the mode to use for curls on dry hair. Clamp a section near the root, rotate the tool and glide down. The listed maximum of 230°C is far more than most hair needs for curling, so a lower setting is a sensible place to start.

The listing does not describe how the housing is shaped, so it is hard to judge from the page alone how smoothly it turns compared with a rounded ghd.

Wet mode for the drying stage

Wet mode blows air through the plates to dry and straighten towel-dried hair at the same time, and Shark says this is done safely with no heat damage, subject to the listing's footnote. You can also clamp the tool near the scalp to dry the roots. For many people, this replaces the blow-dry before curling.

Combs and weight

Three interchangeable combs are included: Wide Tooth, Gentle and Precision. They help with tension and detangling while drying. Amazon lists 1.55 kg for this colour, which is heavy for curling, as you hold the tool at an angle for longer than when straightening. No auto shut-off timer or cable length is given.

SilkiPro against curling-friendly straighteners

The ghd Platinum+ has a rounder barrel designed for snag-free waves and is far lighter. The ghd Gold Pink edition has curved edges and a bag. The L'Oréal SteamPod 4 uses steam and comb choice and is also pitched at defined curls, at a similar weight.

Who it suits less

If you already air dry or blow-dry and only want a curling tool, the SilkiPro's airflow is unused weight. People who curl daily and value a light tool will find a standard ghd easier on the wrist.

Verdict

The Plum Satin SilkiPro makes sense if you want to dry and then curl or smooth with one tool and like having a choice of combs. If you only need to curl dry hair, the ghd Platinum+ is lighter and shaped for waves, and the L'Oréal SteamPod 4 is the steam-based alternative.
