The Dyson Airwrap Origin is the original Airwrap multi-styler, now sold with three attachments: a 40 mm long barrel, an Anti-snag loop brush and a Fast dryer. It is for people who want to dry, curl and smooth with one tool, and who would rather avoid a hot barrel touching their hair. The difference from every tong and wand in its category is that it styles with airflow, and Dyson states the temperature stays under 150°C.

In its favour

  • A bi-directional 40 mm barrel styles both sides without swapping attachments.
  • Dyson states heat stays under 150°C, below the 185°C of the ghd curlers here.
  • The Fast dryer and Anti-snag loop brush handle drying and smoothing too.

Good to know

  • There is no conical barrel, so tighter sections for contrast are harder.
  • Only three attachments are included, fewer than newer Airwrap models.

Our take

How Coanda styling works

Dyson describes Coanda airflow that draws hair towards the barrel and wraps it automatically, in both directions, without clamps or twisting. The 40 mm long barrel can curl clockwise or anticlockwise without changing attachments, which helps create natural movement on both sides of the face.

Power comes from the Dyson Digital Motor V9, which the listing says spins at up to 110,000 rpm. A glass bead thermistor checks exit temperature 40 times a second to keep heat below 150°C.

Settings and attachments

Amazon lists three heat settings, including a constant cold shot, and three speeds. The Fast dryer takes hair from wet to damp or dry, the Anti-snag loop brush smooths for a blow-dry finish, and the barrel does the curls and waves. Dyson's own instructions start with towel-dried hair, pre-drying with the Fast dryer, then sectioning before curling.

The listed weight is 610 g with a wattage of 1300 W.

What air curls need

Air styling works differently from a hot barrel. Curls are set by heat and then cooled with the cold shot, so preparation and technique matter. Results on very straight or very heavy hair may drop sooner than tong curls. With a single 40 mm barrel in this kit, the look is loose curls and waves; tight curls are not on the menu.

Airwrap or a hot tool

Against the ghd Chronos Curve Max Wand, which has a similar 38 mm barrel at 185°C, the Airwrap uses less heat and also dries hair, but asks for more practice. The ghd Chronos Curve Classic Tong gives firmer, more defined curls with a clamp. The Airwrap makes most sense when it replaces a hairdryer and round brush as well as a curler.

Verdict

Choose the Airwrap Origin if you want one tool to dry, smooth and add loose curls at lower heat, and you have time to learn the technique. For quicker, longer-lasting curls with a clamp, the ghd Chronos Curve Classic Tong is more direct, and the Chronos Curve Max Wand is the hot-barrel route to similar loose waves.
