In short
Most hair needs about 5 to 10 seconds on the barrel. Fine or damaged hair often curls in 3 to 5 seconds, while thick or coarse hair may need 10 to 15 seconds. Holding longer than needed adds heat without improving the curl. What makes curls last is letting each one cool completely before touching it, ideally pinned in a loop, because hair sets its shape as it cools.

Hold time is one of the most common questions about curling wands and tongs, and one of the easiest ways to improve results. Too short, and the curl drops. Too long, and you add heat without any benefit. The right time depends on your hair type, section size and the tool's temperature. This explainer gives practical starting points, explains heat-up times and covers why cooling, not holding, is the key to long lasting curls.
Hold times by hair type
Use the table as a starting point, then adjust. Start at the low end and add a couple of seconds only if curls do not hold. These times assume sections of about 2 to 3 cm and a tool at around 185 °C, which is where ghd's wands and tongs style.
| Hair type | Starting hold time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fine or thin | 3 to 5 seconds | Lower heat if adjustable |
| Bleached or damaged | 3 to 5 seconds | Lowest effective heat |
| Normal | 5 to 8 seconds | Most people start here |
| Thick | 8 to 12 seconds | Use smaller sections |
| Coarse or resistant | 10 to 15 seconds | Smaller sections help more than longer holds |
Why longer is not better
Once the hair in a section has reached the barrel's temperature all the way through, holding longer does not make a firmer curl; it just adds heat. If curls drop, the usual cause is a section that is too thick for the heat to pass through, hair that is very slippery or not letting the curl cool before touching it.
Thick sections are the main reason people hold too long. Halve the section and you often halve the time. Our explainer on whether straighteners damage hair explains why repeated, prolonged heat adds up, and the same applies to curling tools.
Why wand curls last longer when they cool
Hair sets its new shape as it cools. If you brush or touch a curl while it is still warm, it relaxes. Letting each curl cool fully in its coiled shape locks it in. That is why many stylists pin each curl in a loop against the head while it cools, then release them all at once.
Wands can give curls that last longer than straighteners for some people because the hair cools in a coil after sliding off the barrel. On long hair, the weight of the lengths pulls curls down while warm, so pinning helps even more; see how to curl long hair.
- 1
Wrap the section and hold for your starting time.
- 2
Slide the curl off into your palm without unwinding it.
- 3
Pin it in a loop with a clip, or let it hang untouched.
- 4
Repeat around the head.
- 5
When every curl is cool, unpin and break up with fingers.
How long wands take to heat up
Most premium wands and tongs reach styling temperature in under a minute or two. Many show a light or display, or beep, when they are ready. Using a wand before it is fully hot means you hold longer to compensate, so wait for the ready signal. ghd's Curve and Chronos Curve ranges style at 185 °C, and adjustable models list their range in the manual; our temperature converter helps with °F settings.
When you finish, wands and tongs stay hot for a while. Rest them on their stand or a heat proof mat until fully cool before putting them away.
Note:Wands and tongs reach temperatures that can burn skin instantly. Wear the heat glove, keep the barrel away from your face and neck, and keep tools out of reach of children while hot and cooling.
Choosing a tool that makes timing easier
Tools with stable heat give more predictable timing, because the barrel does not cool as you curl. Some, like ghd's Chronos Curve range, describe heat that adapts to your curling. Barrel size changes the look more than timing does; see what size curling wand to get. For premium options, our best curling wands and tongs guide compares current models.
Frequently asked questions
How long do you hold a curling iron? Usually 5 to 10 seconds, less on fine hair and more on thick hair.
Why do my curls fall out quickly? Sections too thick, not letting curls cool or very slippery hair. Use smaller sections and pin curls to cool.
How long does a curling wand take to heat up? Most premium tools are ready in under a minute or two. Wait for the ready light or beep.
Should I hold longer on the ends? No. Ends are the oldest, most fragile part of the hair. Keep timing the same or shorter.
