In short
Most Airstrait problems come from a blocked filter, a power issue or the styler pausing because its arms are open. Unplug it, clean the filter as your manual shows, and make sure it is fully dry and refitted before use. Check the socket and plug fuse. If lights keep flashing or it still cuts out, contact Dyson.

The Dyson Airstrait straightens with jets of heated air rather than hot plates. That means it depends on good airflow, and when the filter clogs it can cut out, lose heat or show a warning light. Other common problems are simple power faults and confusion about the auto-pause, which stops airflow when the arms are open. This guide works through the likely causes, how to clean the filter safely, and what to check if the Airstrait stopped working after cleaning. Dyson's own light patterns vary, so keep the manual handy.
Quick checks first
- 1
Unplug the Airstrait and let it cool for 10 to 15 minutes.
- 2
Check the filter at the air intake and clean it if it looks dusty or furred.
- 3
Plug it directly into a wall socket you know works.
- 4
Close the arms around a section of hair: the Airstrait pauses airflow when the arms are open.
- 5
Switch it on at a low setting and test.
Note:Always unplug the Airstrait before cleaning. Never put it in water, and never use it until every part is completely dry. If the cable is damaged or you smell burning, stop using it and contact Dyson.
Symptoms and likely causes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No power | Socket, plug fuse or cable | Test the socket, check the fuse |
| Cuts out mid-style | Overheating from a blocked filter | Clean the filter, let it cool |
| Flashing light | Filter reminder or fault warning | Clean the filter; check the manual |
| Air stops when arms open | Normal auto-pause | Close the arms on hair |
| Weak airflow | Blocked filter or intake | Clean the filter and intake |
| Stopped after cleaning | Filter not refitted, or damp parts | Refit, dry fully, retry |
Airstrait not turning on
Start with the socket by plugging in another appliance. If you use an extension lead, try a wall socket instead. Then check the fuse in the UK plug and replace it only with one of the same rating marked on the plug or in the manual.
Look closely along the cable, especially where it enters the handle. If the styler only works when you hold the cable at an angle, there is a broken wire and it needs a repair from Dyson.
Cleaning the Airstrait filter
Dyson recommends cleaning the filter regularly, and some versions show a reminder when it needs attention. The exact way the filter cap comes off depends on your version, so follow the diagram in your manual.
Hair, dust and styling product mist all collect on the filter. A blocked filter reduces airflow, and the Airstrait's thermal protection may then cut the heat or switch the styler off to stop it overheating.
- 1
Unplug the styler and let it cool.
- 2
Remove the filter cap or cover as shown in the manual.
- 3
Use the cleaning brush supplied, or a dry soft brush, to remove dust and hair.
- 4
Wipe the outside with a dry cloth. Do not rinse the filter unless your manual says it is washable.
- 5
Refit the cover until it clicks or locks firmly in place.
Airstrait not working after cleaning
This is a common search, and the cause is usually one of three things. The filter cover may not be fully seated, so the styler will not run. Moisture may have got inside if a damp cloth was used, so leave it somewhere warm and dry for several hours before trying again. Or the styler may still be in a protection state after overheating; let it cool fully.
If none of these work, contact Dyson support. Our how to use the Dyson Airstrait guide covers the wet and dry modes if the styler runs but does not straighten well.
Guarantee and support
Dyson says the Airstrait comes with a two-year guarantee when bought from Dyson or an authorised retailer. Register it and keep your proof of purchase. Buy from authorised sellers, as fakes are sold online; see how to spot fake ghd and Dyson stylers.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Dyson Airstrait keep cutting out? The most common cause is a blocked filter, which makes it overheat. Clean the filter, let the styler cool and try again.
Why does the air stop when I open the arms? This is normal. The Airstrait pauses airflow when the arms are open and resumes when you close them on hair.
How often should I clean the Airstrait filter? Follow the reminder or your manual. A quick clean every week or two keeps airflow strong if you use it daily.
Can I wash the Airstrait filter in water? Only if your manual says it is washable. Otherwise use the brush supplied and a dry cloth.
